Are There Any Import Drivers In Detroit?

Published

on

I was in Detroit last week, and one thing I noticed is that EVERYONE drives a domestic. I realize that Detroit is home to the Big Three, but it’s pretty weird when you’re driving on the highway and all you see are American cars. Where are the imports??

In three days, I saw one Subaru (an STI that was in one of the Ford lots), one BMW (with South Carolina plates), and maybe two or three Hondas and Toyotas.

EVERYTHING else was American!

Even more surprising was the large amount of Mustangs in Detroit. With the amount of snow Detroit gets each year, I wouldn’t have expected to see so many of them. But as one of the Ford guys (who drives an ’11 GT) told me, most people have a beater to get them through the winters. In his case, he’s got an older F150.

I’m curious what kind of cars the upper-class drive, as none of the Big Three offers a luxury car that competes with BMW and Mercedes. Lincoln and Cadillac have some nice cars, but if you’re looking for something comparable to a Mercedes S550, you’re out of luck..

I imagine if you drive an import in this town, you’ll probably get an earful from people. Heck, I was walking through the hotel lobby wearing a Porsche shirt, and some random lady came up to me and got loud. It was pretty bizarre.

Still, there’s something nice about everyone’s brand loyalty..
