Ready for a little Bourbon Street on the Boardwalk? Well then grab a Hurricane, a bowl of Gumbo, and break out the beads at Showboat Atlantic City, where Mardi Gras isn’t just a day, it’s a way of life. Showboat Atlantic City presents Mardi Gras 2013 on February 12th, and for this Fat Tuesday celebration, the casino hotel is offering themed entertainment and plentiful food and beverage options.
More than a dozen of the world’s best competitive eaters will gather at Showboat Casino and Hotel in Atlantic City for the Fat Tuesday King Cake Eating World Championship, an eight minute, open-to-the-public, stuff-your-face-a-thon beginning at 2:30pm at the House of Blues Party Pit. The Major League Eating-sanctioned event is part of Showboat’s annual Mardi Gras celebration and offers $4,000 in cash prizes; $2,000 to the top finisher with the second through fifth place finishers earning $1,000, $500, $300 and $200, respectively.
Three-time King Cake Eating Champion Pat “Deep Dish” Bertoletti returns to defend his title and seeks to break his 2010 record of 10.5 pounds of King Cake in 8 minutes. Bertoletti, a mohawked chef from Chicago, is the #2-ranked eater in the world and holds 38 eating records, including 275 jalapeno peppers in 8 minutes and 72 cupcakes in 6 minutes.
Challenging Bertoletti will be the top female eater in the world, Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas (ranked #4 in the world), of Alexandria, VA and Philly-favorite Notorious B.O.B. Shoudt (ranked #5) of Royersford, PA. At just 105 pounds, Thomas once again made headlines in 2012 when she set a new female July 4th hot dog eating record by downing 45 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes and claimed her second Women’s Hot Dog Eating Championship. The Philadelphia region will also send to the table Sean “Flash” Gordon of Downingtown, Micah Collins and Eric “Steakbellie” Livingston, both of Drexel Hill.
“Showboat Atlantic City has proudly hosted Major League Eating for five straight years, with each Fat Tuesday King Cake Eating Championship growing exponentially,” said Kevin Ortzman, Senior VP and General Manager of Showboat, Caesars, and Bally’s Atlantic City. “Watching some of the world’s most tenacious and ravenous eaters excel at their craft is a spectacle that must be seen to be believed, so plan on coming down to Atlantic City for this open-to-the-public event, which is sure to be a 2013 Mardi Gras that you won’t soon forget.”
New Orleans has been called “The Fat City,” and for good reason, the native cuisine is of the most recognizable and indulgent in the world. In honor of Mardi Gras, Showboat’s Executive Chef Robert Schoell is adding even more Cajun and creole flair to an already impressive spread. For $29.99, from Noon to 9pm, the French Quarter Buffet is offering guests NOLA favorites like: Whole Roast Pig; Signature Louisiana Shrimp Boil; Shrimp Étouffée; Cornmeal Crusted Catfish; Chicken and Smoked Sausage Gumbo; and Shrimp Po’ Boys. Additionally, FREEZE, Spirit, and 12 Bar are all offering $8 Hurricane drink specials, with $4 refills and a collectable cup to keep.
