Your Dad probably always told you that to do a job right you need to have right equipment. The same can be said for automobiles as well. A paramedic needs an ambulance while a soccer mom needs a minivan. When the worst finally arrives, and the zombie apocalypse gets here, the vehicle you have may determine how long you live. Here are some things to consider.
First of all, you are going to need something tough that can easily run over a shuffling mob of reanimated corpses. You should try to get a good SUV to help you out. A truck isn’t a wise idea because you have to store things in the bed, which requires you to exit in order to reach it. Getting out of a safe place is the last thing you want to do in when it all hits the fan.
Ideally your SUV should be a 4×4. You never know if you are going to have to plow through barricades, roll over fences, or cut across a parking lot filled with the debris of a civilization lost. While you do need as much storage as you can get, a large SUV doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a good one. Many are gas guzzlers and let’s face it, gas will be like gold once the undead overrun everything. A hybrid will help stretch your limited supply of fuel further.
When it comes to add-ons, you want to spare no expense. Off road, all terrain tires will be a life saver. Buy at least one spare and even pack some Fix-A-Flat and an air pump. Jack your vehicle up some as well. Yes, it looks like a monster truck, but you need to have enough clearance to keep torn arms and legs from getting caught in your axles.

A winch will soon become your best friend (besides the fact there might be nobody left alive to fill that role). You should probably mount it on the back so you can have more pulling power. You may also need to use your front for a bulldozer blade. A wench will enable you to clear burned cars and fallen trees out of the road. A trailer hitch will let you pull around more supplies as well.
Purchase a set of high powered flood lights to mount on the roof your car. This extra light will be handy when trying to scout out a campsite at night or spot shufflers in the dark. You will probably also want to get fog lights and high beams as well.
Lastly you may want to invest in a long range ham radio and antennae. Yes, it looks absurd, but these will be tough times and you got to do what you got to do. While there aren’t likely to be any, a ham radio will let you listen for other survivors or safe zones.
It is just a matter of time before the apocalypse gets here and you need to be ready. If you do all of this will you survive? Probably not, but having the right vehicle will give you a fighting chance, which is more than most will have.
