Earlier this year, TechCrunch said that Apple would be replacing the 30-pin dock connector on the new iPhone with a smaller version in order to save space inside of the device.
Now Reuters has released a report of it’s own which pretty much confirms this.
“The iPhone 5, Apple’s next generation iPhone expected to go on sale around October, will come with a 19-pin connector port at the bottom instead of the proprietary 30-pin port “to make room for the earphone moving to the bottom”, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.”
This news sucks for those of us with expensive speaker docks or other accessories (unless someone comes up with some sort of adapter), not to mention that now I’ll need to carry two separate charging cords – One for the iPad, and one for the iPhone 5.
I’m really struggling to understand the logic behind this monumental change..
Some Apple fanboys I talked to said this change could be for USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt compatibility. Everyone we’ve talked to is upset with the news. I imagine the only people happy about this are the 3rd-party companies who’ll gladly sell you some new accessories.

I thought all the phones had to use the mini-usb, I thought that was becoming industry standard?
