In recent years, Black Friday mania has gotten out of hand, with many stores opening up earlier and earlier in hopes of luring customers their way. But outdoor gear and sporting goods retailer REI is bucking the trend by cancelling Black Friday this year. That’s right, they are closing all 143 of their stores and encouraging people to forgo shopping and #OptOutside instead. And they’re paying their employees to do so!
“While the rest of the world is fighting it out in the aisles, we hope to see you in the great outdoors.” It’s a bold decision by REI CEO Jerry Stritzke, but one that we firmly stand behind.
