Amazon Alexa+ is now free for Prime members

Amazon just dropped a game-changer for Prime members: Alexa+, their next-generation AI assistant, is now available nationwide and completely free if you’re already paying for Prime. For everyone else, there’s a free tier to test it out, or you can subscribe for $19.99 per month.

After nearly a year in early access with tens of millions of users, Amazon is rolling out what they’re calling their most powerful assistant yet. This isn’t your old Alexa, it’s a complete rebuild using large language models that can handle significantly more complex requests and actually get things done for you.

What Makes Alexa+ Different from Regular Alexa

The upgrade is substantial. According to Daniel Rausch, Vice President of Alexa and Echo, Alexa+ has “an entirely new architecture powered by large language models—from both Amazon Nova and Anthropic.” The result? An assistant that can hold real conversations, remember context over multiple days, and handle tasks that would have stumped the original Alexa.

Early access users have been “interacting with Alexa+ more than twice as much” as they did with standard Alexa. That’s because people are moving beyond basic commands and having actual conversations—debating music choices, exploring complex topics, and getting detailed answers that feel more like talking to a knowledgeable friend than a bot.

It Can Actually Do Things for You

Here’s where it gets interesting for busy guys: Alexa+ has what Amazon calls “agentic capabilities,” meaning it can complete multi-step tasks without you having to micromanage every detail. Need dinner? It can order takeout, find restaurants, and make reservations. Running late? It’ll book you a ride. Home needs work? It can schedule repair services.

The smart home integration is next-level too. You can pair Alexa+ with Ring cameras to get alerts about unusual activity, automatically add family schedules to your calendar by just emailing them to Alexa, and even have it walk you through cooking a new recipe step-by-step after shopping for the missing ingredients.

Three Ways to Get Alexa+

Amazon’s offering three tiers, and the pricing structure is pretty straightforward:

  • For Prime Members (Free): If you’re already paying for Prime, you now get unlimited access to everything Alexa+ can do across all your devices, the Alexa app, and Alexa.com. The whole household can use it, and it integrates with your existing Prime benefits like Amazon Photos and Prime Video.
  • Free Chat Version: Don’t subscribe to Prime? You can still try Alexa+ through a text-based chat interface at Alexa.com and in the Alexa app. It’s usage-limited, but it’ll give you a taste of what the AI can do—quick answers, research, planning, and topic exploration.
  • Full Access ($19.99/month): For non-Prime members who want the complete experience across all devices and platforms, the standalone subscription gets you everything Prime members get, just without the other Prime perks.

How to Get Started

If you’re a Prime member, just say “Alexa, upgrade to Alexa+” to any Alexa device, or log into your Amazon account at Alexa.com. Non-Prime members can head to Amazon.com/AlexaPlus to sign up or try the free chat version at Alexa.com.

The Bottom Line

Amazon is clearly betting big on AI assistants, and the fact they’re bundling this into Prime membership makes it a no-brainer for existing subscribers. The real test will be whether Alexa+ can consistently handle those complex tasks without requiring multiple attempts or clarifications. But with millions already using it in early access, Amazon seems confident they’ve built something that actually works.

For guys looking to streamline daily tasks, automate the smart home, or just have a more capable AI assistant in their pocket, Alexa+ represents a significant upgrade over what came before. And if you’re already paying for Prime, you’ve got nothing to lose by trying it out.
