The craziest Subaru ever built is ready to fly, slide, and shred its way across Australia.

The Return of a Viral Legend

The wait is over. Gymkhana is back, and it’s going big. Hoonigan and Subaru Motorsports USA have officially revived the internet-breaking franchise, debuting their newest four-wheeled weapon at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas: the Subaru Brataroo 9500 Turbo, a purpose-built, high-flying machine created for Travis Pastrana’s next insane Gymkhana film.

The latest entry in the iconic series, titled Aussie Shred, will take place across Australia, the birthplace of the word “hoon.” Expect the usual chaos: massive jumps, impossible drifts, and high-speed precision driving through iconic Aussie landmarks. But this time, Pastrana will be piloting something even wilder than before.

Meet the Subaru Brataroo 9500 Turbo

At its core, the Brataroo is a reimagined 1978 Subaru BRAT that’s been engineered to perform at the bleeding edge of performance and creativity. The name might sound playful, but this thing is no toy. It’s a 670-horsepower, 9,500 RPM, turbocharged, all-wheel-drive monster capable of attacking corners, sliding sideways, and launching skyward.

Built by Subaru of America and Vermont SportsCar, the Brataroo’s rallycross-derived 2.0-liter boxer engine delivers 680 lb-ft of torque and revs like a superbike. A six-speed sequential SADEV gearbox and motorsport-grade differentials ensure the power is never wasted.

Every inch of the Brataroo was engineered for punishment. The entire body is carbon fiber, stretched over a VSC-built chassis and WRC-spec roll cage. And while it still pays homage to the original BRAT’s silhouette, designer Khyzyl Saleem (The Kyza) reshaped the car into a radical, widebody beast that looks like a rally car from another dimension.

Active Aero Like You’ve Never Seen Before

This is the most aerodynamically advanced Gymkhana car ever built. The Brataroo features active front fender louvers that adjust in real-time to balance the car mid-flight. Yes, you read that right, the aero setup is literally designed for flying.

Out back, interchangeable rear wings allow Travis to switch between high-downforce stability or maximum drift freedom. Both wings can tilt and extend to fine-tune the Brataroo’s airborne pitch, giving him control during those jaw-dropping leaps that make Gymkhana so addictive.

As the larger wing extends, it widens too, increasing its surface area for extra stability at high speed or during mid-air stunts. It’s wild, functional, and completely over-engineered in the best possible way.

Built to Pay Tribute—and Break the Internet

The Brataroo’s retro-meets-modern design pays tribute to Subaru’s rally heritage. The livery, complete with kangaroos flashing Pastrana’s thumbs-up and throwback ’70s Subaru graphics, was inspired by Australian sunsets and Pastrana’s signature style. It even features his longtime partners KMC Wheels, Mercury Marine, Yokohama, Heat Wave, and Dixxon.

Inside, the cockpit mixes nostalgia with tech. A carbon-fiber dash, flax-composite wood-grain trim, and even a period-correct Uniden CB radio throw back to 1978, while repurposed HVAC controls now adjust the car’s active aero. It’s the kind of insane attention to detail that makes Gymkhana cars true one-offs.

Pastrana Calls It “Unhinged”

Travis Pastrana sums it up best: “This BRAT’s completely unhinged – in the best way possible. It’s got the soul of a vintage Subaru with the tech to do things no Gymkhana car has ever done. Every part of it is designed to take abuse, fly big, and come back for more. It’s hands down the craziest Gymkhana car we’ve ever built.”

And coming from Pastrana, the man who backflipped a dirt bike into a bay, that’s definitely saying something.

The Legacy Continues

Unveiled at the 2025 SEMA Show, the Subaru Brataroo marks the start of “Gymkhana Season,” continuing the wild, creative spirit first unleashed by the late Ken Block. The upcoming film promises to be the most outrageous yet, with a blend of cinematic chaos, automotive artistry, and full-throttle insanity.

So get ready. Gymkhana: Aussie Shred premieres early December on the Hoonigan YouTube channel. Expect epic drifts, massive air, and the unmistakable sound of a Subaru boxer at full throttle as it screams past 9,500 RPM.
