5 Ways To Make Your Mattress Last Longer

Published

on

Mattresses can cost several hundred dollars, so you want to get as much use from them as possible. Follow these five tips to make your mattress last longer. They should help you save money while giving you a better night’s sleep.

1. Rotate Or Flip The Mattress Every Three Months

How you sleep can affect how long your mattress lasts. If you sleep in the same position every night, then you will put a lot of wear on the same spot. Rotating your mattress once every three months helps protect it from this deterioration.

Here’s an easy schedule to help keep your mattress in top condition:

  • In spring, rotate the mattress 180 degrees
  • In summer, flip the mattress so that the previous sleeping surface goes next to the frame or box springs
  • In fall, rotate the mattress 180 degrees again
  • In winter, flip the mattress again

It’s easiest to remove all pillows and linens before rotating your mattress. You may also need someone to help, especially when you need to flip it over. Some mattresses are designed with only one sleeping surface, and should not be flipped.

2. Get A Mattress Pad

Mattress pads will also help protect your mattress from nightly wear and tear. Mattress pads are made from various materials; some of the best options include natural latex or memory foam. These provide a soft, supportive surface that will help you stay comfortable during the night while protecting your mattress.

Most mattress pads are between half an inch and four inches thick. Any size will protect your mattress, so choose one that feels comfortable to you.

3. Choose A Reliable Mattress

A quality mattress made from durable materials will last longer than one made cheaply. The best mattresses may have higher prices, but their longer life usually makes up for the extra money.

Read mattress reviews to make sure you buy a design that fits your sleeping habits and needs and that other people have had good experiences with. Don’t waste your money on a mattress that gets a lot of negative reviews.

4. Keep Your Pets Off the Bed

Your pets, no matter how cute and clean they are, will track unwanted things like dirt and dander into your bed. There’s also the possibility that even well-trained animals will have accidents.

You might love to snuggle with your pet, but there is a payoff to keeping them off the bed.

5. Vacuum The Mattress And Wash the Linens

Your bed can collect a lot of allergens, including troublesome dust mites. You can eliminate many of these by vacuuming your mattress once a week. You will also want to wash your linens at the same time. Make sure you wash your covers, sheets, and pillowcases in water that’s at least 130 degrees Fahrenheit. It also helps to use high heat when drying your linens.

If you have linens that can’t be washed, use the dryer to eliminate dust mites. It’s also possible to kill mites by freezing your linens.

Do you already follow any of these tips? How well do you think they have extended the life of your mattress?
