Corvette ZR1X Becomes Fastest American Car Ever At Nürburgring
When it comes to pushing the limits of performance, the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife is the ultimate proving ground, and Chevrolet just delivered one of its boldest statements yet. In an unprecedented display of engineering and driver confidence, Chevy brought not one, but three high-performance Corvettes to the legendary 12.9-mile German circuit and came away with three official lap times, including the fastest ever recorded by an American manufacturer.
This marks a significant moment not just for the Corvette brand, but for the entire American performance car segment. With a blistering 6:49.275 lap time, the all-new Corvette ZR1X is now officially faster than the Ford Mustang GTD and even some of Germany’s most revered track machines.
A Nürburgring Triple Threat: Z06, ZR1, and ZR1X
In a first-of-its-kind event, Chevrolet took three different Corvettes models, each representing a different level of performance, and recorded three separate Nürburgring lap times during a single coordinated test.

All three vehicles were U.S. production-spec models with only the safety equipment required by the Nürburgring—no performance modifications. This included roll hoops, full containment racing seats, fire extinguishers, and six-point safety harnesses.
In addition, each of these laps was driven not by pro race drivers, but by GM’s own engineers, the same people who developed and tuned the vehicles. That makes the achievement even more impressive.
“No auto manufacturer has done a Nürburgring lap attempt like this before,” said Mark Reuss, GM President. “From development through production, and now at the Nürburgring, the Green Hell, we have clearly shown there is no limit to what our GM engineers and vehicles can accomplish. These are the best Corvettes in history, period.”
The ZR1X: Corvette’s Electrified Game-Changer
The spotlight belongs to the Corvette ZR1X, Chevrolet’s most advanced Vette to date. This bad boy packs a 1,250-horsepower punch from a twin-turbocharged V8 paired with a front-axle electric motor, creating a cutting-edge all-wheel-drive platform. It’s the first electrified Corvette to tackle the ‘Ring, and it delivered in a big way.
With GM engineer Drew Cattell behind the wheel, the ZR1X ran the Nordschleife in 6:49.275, placing it ahead of the Porsche 911 GT3 RS (6:49.328) and the Mustang GTD (6:52.072). It now ranks fifth overall on the Nürburgring’s official production car leaderboard.
ZR1 and Z06 Deliver Stellar Results Too
Not to be outdone, the Corvette ZR1 followed closely behind with an impressive 6:50.763 lap, driven by vehicle dynamics engineer Brian Wallace. Its 1,064-hp twin-turbo V8 showcases what Chevy’s flat-plane-crank architecture can achieve when boosted and unleashed.
Meanwhile, the Corvette Z06, driven by GM’s vehicle performance manager Aaron Link, posted a 7:11.826 lap, great for a naturally aspirated car w/o forced induction or electrification.
The Engineers Behind the Wheel
These weren’t race car drivers chasing lap times, these were the very engineers who built the cars. Cattell, Wallace, and Link are part of the elite group of GM engineers certified to drive at the Nürburgring. Between them, they’ve made over 1,800 laps of the track and 31 development trips to Germany. Their experience is extensive:
- Aaron Link: 800+ laps at the Nürburgring
- Drew Cattell: 600+ laps
- Brian Wallace: 425+ laps
They also bring a combined 36 years of experience working on GM’s Performance Cars, and Wallace even leads GM’s high-performance driver training program.
“These Corvettes weren’t piloted by pro drivers. They were driven by the same engineers who designed, engineered and tuned them,” said Ken Morris, GM’s Senior Vice President of Product Programs. “Brian, Aaron and Drew have grown into world-class drivers and even better engineers. Their lap times now rank among the fastest ever recorded by non-professionals at the ‘Ring, which is so cool.”
Homegrown Speed: A Corvette Story
To document this extraordinary effort, Chevy is releasing a film titled Homegrown Speed: A Corvette Story, giving enthusiasts an inside look at the engineering journey from Michigan’s Milford Proving Grounds to the Nürburgring. The documentary highlights the teamwork, technology, and determination it took to pull off this triple-record attempt.
In addition to the three engineers who set the lap times, the film features Reuss, Senior Vice President of Product Programs, Safety, Integration and Motorsports Ken Morris and Corvette Executive Chief Engineer Tony Roma.
