TSA PreCheck Touchless ID Is Coming To 65 Airports, And It’s A Game-Changer!

Man Walking Through Airport

Nobody has time for a three-hour security line. But that’s the reality at a growing number of US airports right now, where staffing shortages tied to the partial government shutdown have pushed wait times to up to three hours at some locations. Spring travel season is nearly here, and if you’re not doing everything you can to speed up your checkpoint experience, you’re going to feel it. That’s where TSA PreCheck Touchless ID comes in, and it’s rolling out to 65 airports this spring.

I got to experience it firsthand coming home through LAX last week, and I’ll be honest, it was pretty amazing. I walked up to the checkpoint, looked at the camera, and was through in about 30 seconds flat. No pulling out my ID, no fumbling for my phone to show my boarding pass. Just my face, a quick glance, and I was good to go. If you’ve got TSA PreCheck and haven’t set this up yet, here’s everything you need to know.

The Airport Security Problem Isn’t Going Away Anytime Soon

Let’s be honest about what’s happening at airports right now. Some airports are already telling passengers to arrive as early as 3-4 hours before their flights because of security delays. Even TSA PreCheck holders, who already enjoy expedited screening, are feeling the pinch as lines back up across terminals. If you’re a frequent flyer or have a tight connection, this isn’t just an inconvenience. It’s a real problem.

The good news is that TSA has a solution built specifically to speed things up even further, and it’s available to you right now if you take a few minutes to set it up.

What Is TSA PreCheck Touchless ID?

TSA PreCheck Touchless ID is a next-level (free) upgrade on top of your existing PreCheck membership. Instead of having to hand over your ID and boarding pass for manual inspection, you simply look into a camera at a dedicated lane and keep moving. The system uses facial comparison tech to verify your identity against your stored passport information in seconds. No fumbling, no handing over your phone, no digging through your jacket for your wallet.

TSA says the process takes ~10 seconds, cutting identity verification time in half compared to a standard TSA PreCheck lane. Doesn’t sound like much, but the Touchless ID lines are virtually empty right now, while PreCheck lines still have 20-30 people waiting. It’s a huge advantage, and especially now with everything that’s going on.

How Much Time Can It Actually Save You?

Think about what the standard PreCheck process looks like today: you approach the podium, the officer checks your boarding pass, checks your ID, looks back at you, hands everything back, and waves you through. It’s fast compared to the regular line, but it still takes time, especially when there are dozens of people ahead of you doing the same thing.

With Touchless ID, that podium exchange is gone entirely. You walk up, a camera captures your face, it matches against your passport on file, and you move on. The live photo is securely matched against your stored passport in the time it takes to take a step forward. Multiply that across a busy checkpoint and the throughput difference is significant, both for you and for the line behind you.

Bob Allison, TSA’s Federal Security Director for Massachusetts, framed it plainly when the program launched at Boston: “Bringing TSA PreCheck Touchless ID to Boston Logan marks another step forward in modernizing airport security and improving the passenger journey.”

Who Qualifies?

You need three things:

Active TSA PreCheck membership. Your Known Traveler Number (KTN) needs to be on file with your airline. If you don’t have PreCheck yet, enrollment is open to U.S. citizens, nationals, and lawful permanent residents — and with lines where they are right now, it’s worth doing.

A valid passport on file. Your face is matched against your passport data, not a driver’s license. You’ll need to upload your passport number to your airline profile.

A participating airline. The program currently works with Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines — which covers the vast majority of domestic travelers.

How To Get Set Up In 5 Minutes

This is the easiest part. Log into your airline profile and do the following:

  1. Add your Known Traveler Number (KTN) if it isn’t already there.
  2. Enter your valid passport number and country.
  3. Select “OPT IN” through your profile settings or at airline check-in. This step is critical — having TSA PreCheck alone doesn’t automatically enroll you.
  4. On travel day, check your mobile boarding pass for the TSA PreCheck Touchless ID indicator. If it appears, head to the dedicated Touchless ID lane and you’re set.

That’s it. No new membership, no additional fees, no appointment needed. If you already have PreCheck and you’re flying on one of the five participating airlines, you can be opted in before you finish reading this article.

Which Airports Support TSA PreCheck Touchless ID?

This is where it gets useful. Availability depends on both your airline and the specific airport — you can only use the TSA PreCheck Touchless ID lanes if your airline partners with the service at that airport, and only if you’ve opted in with that carrier. Here’s the full breakdown by airline as of early 2026:

American Airlines Boston Logan (BOS), Charlotte Douglas (CLT), Dallas Fort Worth (DFW), Denver (DEN), Detroit Wayne County (DTW), Dulles/Washington D.C. (IAD), Houston Bush Intercontinental (IAH), Las Vegas Harry Reid (LAS), Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson (ATL), JFK (JFK), John Wayne/Orange County (SNA), Kansas City (MCI), LaGuardia (LGA), Los Angeles (LAX), Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP), Newark Liberty (EWR), O’Hare/Chicago (ORD), Palm Beach (PBI), Philadelphia (PHL), Portland (PDX), Reagan National (DCA), Salt Lake City (SLC), San Francisco (SFO), San Jose Mineta (SJC), Seattle-Tacoma (SEA), William P. Hobby/Houston (HOU)

Delta Air Lines ATL, BOS, CLT, Dallas Love Field (DAL), DCA, DEN, DFW, DTW, EWR, HOU, IAD, IAH, JFK, LAS, LGA, LAX, MCI, MSP, ORD, PBI, PDX, PHL, SEA, SFO, SJC, SLC, SNA

United Airlines ATL, BOS, CLT, DCA, DEN, DFW, EWR, IAD, IAH, LAS, LAX, LGA, MCI, MSP, ORD, PDX, PHL, SEA, SFO, SJC, SLC, SNA

Southwest Airlines ATL, BOS, CLT, DAL, DEN, DTW, IAD, HOU, LAS, LAX, LGA, MCI, Oakland/San Francisco Bay (OAK), ORD, PBI, PDX, PHL, SEA, SFO, SJC, SLC, SNA

Alaska Airlines ATL, DAL, DCA, DEN, DTW, HOU, IAD, IAH, JFK, LAS, LAX, MCI, MSP, PBI, PDX, PHL, SEA, SJC, SLC, SNA

Stephen Taber, TSA’s Federal Security Director for MIA, spoke to what the ongoing expansion means: “We are excited to offer this cutting-edge option to our travelers, reducing wait times and leading to a more streamlined security screening process.”

What About Privacy?

It’s a fair question. The short answer is that TSA has built meaningful protections into the program. Images are not used for law enforcement, surveillance, nor shared with other entities. Your photo and personal data are deleted within 24 hours of your scheduled flight departure.

The biometric camera is there for one purpose only: confirming you are who your boarding pass says you are, faster than a human officer can do it manually.

Don’t Forget Your Physical ID

One important note: even with your Touchless ID enabled, you still need to carry a REAL ID-compliant physical form of identification. TSA officers can still request it, and as anyone who’s watched technology hiccup at a busy checkpoint knows, it’s smart to have a backup. Keep your ID in your wallet, but bring it.

Stop Waiting. Start Moving.

With spring travel season arriving and security lines already at crisis levels at some airports, this is not the time to skip an upgrade that costs you nothing and saves you real time at the checkpoint. If you’ve got TSA PreCheck and you’re flying on one of the five participating airlines, there’s no reason not to opt in today. Update your airline profile, add your passport info, and let your face do the talking the next time you hit security.
