What Should You Wear To A Christening?
A christening calls for a suit — full stop. Whether you’re the godfather, a family friend, or just a guest, this is a religious ceremony inside of a church, and the dress code reflects that. Here’s exactly what you need to wear so you’re not the guy in khakis wondering why everyone else is dressed up.
The Short Answer: Wear a Suit
I learned this the hard way. My first christening, a friend told me I could get away with khakis and a button-down. When I walked into that church, every other guy was in a suit. Don’t be me.
Business casual is not appropriate here. It’s not a company picnic. It’s a religious milestone for a family that invited you to share it — dress like it matters to them, because it does.
If you genuinely don’t own a suit, a blazer with dress trousers and a tie gets you close enough. But if you have a suit, wear it.
What Kind of Suit?
You don’t need to overthink this. A few solid rules:
Color: Navy or charcoal are your safest bets year-round. A light grey works well in spring and summer. Save the black suit for funerals and formal evening events.
Tie: Wear one. A christening is not the place to go open-collar. Stick to solid colors or subtle patterns — nothing loud.
Shirt: White or light blue. Clean, pressed, tucked in.
Shoes: Leather dress shoes, polished. Brown or oxblood with navy, black with charcoal. No loafers unless they’re genuinely dressy.
What About the Reception After?
Here’s a move most guys don’t think about: if there’s a backyard reception or a casual family lunch after the ceremony, pack a change of clothes in the car. You don’t have to stay suited up all afternoon, but you absolutely want to walk into that church looking sharp.
Change after the ceremony, enjoy the party, done.
Seasonal Adjustments
Winter/Fall: Your standard suit works perfectly. A wool overcoat over it looks excellent.
Spring/Summer: Lighter fabrics — linen or cotton-blend suits are fine. Swap the dark navy for lighter grey or even a tan/beige if the reception is outdoors. Still wear the tie inside the church.
Quick Checklist Before You Leave the House
- ✅ Suit (or blazer + dress trousers at minimum)
- ✅ Tie — worn, not stuffed in your pocket
- ✅ Dress shirt, ironed
- ✅ Leather dress shoes, polished
- ✅ Change of clothes in the car (if there’s a casual reception)
When in doubt, overdress. Nobody has ever left a christening thinking, “Man, I wish I hadn’t worn a suit.”

Christening are truly a time to dress your best. Zander is giving some great advice. I approve of his message that Business casual is not the way to. Suit and tie is best.
