Couple on a first date

There’s no doubt about it, going on a date is always an exciting yet nerve-wracking experience, as you want to make a good impression and set the stage for a great evening. However, with a little bit of planning and attention to detail, you can make sure that your date starts off on the right foot. In this post, we’ll discuss some essential tips to help men prepare for a successful date, ensuring they feel confident, relaxed, and ready to connect with their special someone.

1. Plan Ahead

Take the time to plan the details of your date in advance. Research the venue or activity you have in mind and make reservations if necessary. Arriving with a well-thought-out plan not only shows your thoughtfulness but also helps avoid any last-minute stress or confusion. If you’re meeting someone for drinks (a popular first-date option for me), make sure that you arrive 10-15 minutes early so that you can secure a spot at the bar, as the last thing you want to deal with is trying to find empty seats when she gets there.

2. Dress To Impress

Women tend to put a lot of time and effort into their outfits when going out on a date, but the same can’t always be said for men sadly. Guys often show up for a date in a t-shirt and shorts, while the girl is wearing a nice dress. Don’t be that guy. Pick out an outfit that’s appropriate for the venue/activity, and don’t be afraid to “overdress”, as there’s nothing wrong about being the best dressed guy in the room. Whether you’re going to a restaurant or meeting at a bar for a few drinks, a fitted button-down shirt, designer jeans, and nice shoes always looks good.

3. Practice Good Hygiene

It should go without saying, but good personal hygiene is of the utmost importance. Show up smelling bad, and your date will be running for the hills. So take a shower beforehand, brush your teeth, and apply a nice cologne. Grooming is equally important, so make sure to have a clean shave (or trimmed beard), styled hair, and well-maintained nails. But don’t stop there, make sure to do some thorough manscaping while you’re at it, as you never know where that first date might go, and you want to be looking all neat and tidy should the clothes come off.

What exactly is manscaping? Manscaping is how men trim and shave their body hair, including below the belt. As a particularly hairy dude, I make sure to trim my chest hair and pubes before a big date. Not only do I feel cleaner, but I know if we end up in bed at the end of the night, she won’t have to contend with a funky jungle down there. Now of course, that leads to the age-old question – Should you trim or shave your junk?

Both options have their pros and cons, but personally I prefer to keep things trim. It’s a lot less maintenance (once you start shaving, you have to keep up with it, as stubble on your nuts is no joke!), and I feel like being hairless down there might freak out some women. That said, being bare is great in the fact that your junk looks bigger, it minimizes crotch odors, and she won’t get random pubes stuck in her mouth during oral.

Either way, our friends at Happy Nuts have some great manscaping products that’ll have you looking and smelling good, including the The Ballber Pro trimmer, Nut and Body Wash, and Comfort Cream. And if you use the code GUYSGAB, you’ll get 10% off your entire order.

4. Relax And Have Fun

Look, it’s perfectly natural to feel nervous before a date, but don’t let that get the better of you. Simply take a deep breath, relax, and try to have fun throughout the evening. Remind yourself that your date is likely feeling just as nervous as you are. Focus on enjoying the conversation, laughter, and shared experiences. By staying present and positive, you’ll create an atmosphere that encourages a genuine connection.

5. Engage In Conversation

Meaningful conversations play a significant role in establishing a connection with your date. Be a good listener, ask open-ended questions, show genuine interest in getting to know her, and maintain eye contact (but not creepily so). Let the conversation flow naturally and see where it takes you. And don’t be afraid to compliment her, whether it’s something about her appearance (“I love that scarf you’re wearing”) or about something she said (“What a crazy story, you’re so adventurous”). Who doesn’t love receiving a nice compliment, am I right?

6. Keep Your Drinking In Check

While it’s perfectly fine to order a drink or two during your date, you do not want to overdo it and become a sloppy mess. It’s understandable that you may want a drink or two to take the edge off, but you need to be mindful of how much you’ve had, as too much alcohol can impair your judgment and hinder meaningful conversation. Moderation is key to ensuring you remain present and engaged throughout the date.

Preparing for a date doesn’t have to be overwhelming. By following these tips, you can boost your confidence, make a great first impression, and create a positive and enjoyable experience for both you and your date. Remember, the most important aspect of a successful date is being yourself and fostering a genuine connection. So, relax, have fun, and embrace the opportunity to get to know someone new.

Good luck!
