Jumanji: Open World Trailer Breaks The Game Out Of The Console

Seven years after Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan first got sucked into a video game cabinet, the tables have now turned. Sony just released the first trailer for Jumanji: Open World, and this time the jungle isn’t waiting for anyone to press start. It’s coming through the screen and into our world.

Wait, So What’s the Twist This Time?

Every modern Jumanji movie has run on the same joke: ordinary people get zapped into the game and stuck playing avatars way cooler than they are. Open World flips that script entirely. Instead of new players getting pulled in, the game breaks out of its console and unleashes its chaos onto our streets. Wild animals, jungle hazards, and yes, our favorite over-the-top avatars start showing up in the real world, whether we’re ready for them or not.

It’s a fitting way to close things out too, since Jumanji 3 is basically a callback to where this whole franchise started back in 1995, when Robin Williams’ Jumanji first proved that what happens in the game does not stay in the game.

There’s also a fun wrinkle: Bravestone, Roundhouse, Finbar, and Oberon show up stuck in a kind of broken “demo mode,” which sets up plenty of chances for chaos as they try to figure out how the real world even works.

The Squad Is Back (And They Brought Friends)

This is billed as the final chapter of the modern trilogy, and it looks like Sony wanted to send it off with basically everybody. Returning for one last ride:

• Rhys Darby as Nigel Billingsley
• Danny DeVito back as Spencer’s grandfather Eddie
• Marin Hinkle as Spencer’s mom, Janice
• Bebe Neuwirth and Lamorne Morris also join the cast, with Morris reportedly playing the repairman whose actions at the end of The Next Level are what kicked this whole mess back off

Jake Kasdan is once again directing, working from a script he co-wrote with collaborators Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg, the same team behind both prior films. That consistency is probably why these movies have kept their rhythm and humor intact across three outings.

When Does It Come Out?

Mark your calendars, as Jumanji: Open World hits theaters on December 25, 2026. Production reportedly ran from late 2025 into spring 2026, and if the snowy, holiday-lit streets in the trailer are any indication, that timeline lines up perfectly with the setting.

Final Thoughts

Three movies in, this franchise has managed to keep finding new angles on the same basic joke, and sending the game into our world instead of the other way around feels like the right way to wrap things up. Whether it can actually stick the landing as the “final” chapter remains to be seen, but between the cast, the callback to the original film, and Kasdan back in the director’s chair, this one has a real shot at going out on a high note.
