Apple’s Biggest Launch In Years: iPhone 18 Pro, Folding iPhone & More

Apple doesn’t do small announcements, but today’s lineup is on a whole other level.. Leading the pack is the iPhone Duo, Apple’s first-ever foldable phone, alongside the beefed-up iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, a redesigned Apple Watch lineup, and AirPods that finally bring real noise cancellation to an open-ear design. If you’ve been holding off on an upgrade, this is the year that breaks your streak.

Here’s what you actually need to know, product by product.

iPhone Duo: Apple’s First Foldable Is Here, And It’s Sweet

Let’s start with the headline. Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, and it’s built to be a serious daily driver rather than a novelty. When closed, it’s compact enough to slide into your pocket with a 5.4-inch outer display. Open it up, and you get a massive 7.6-inch inner display, Apple’s largest ever on an iPhone, built for gaming, streaming, and multitasking without squinting.

“iPhone Duo is the most transformational change to iPhone since the original. With an entirely new design and intuitive experiences, it shows what’s possible when hardware and software are engineered together and redefines what it means to use a foldable phone,” said John Ternus, Apple’s CEO. “With the largest display ever on iPhone that still fits easily in your pocket, combined with the power of A20 Pro, iPhone Duo helps you stay more immersed and productive wherever you go, whether enjoying content, multitasking across apps, or gaming.”

The hinge is engineered from more than 100 components and built to hold the display flat when open, and the whole thing is wrapped in grade 5 titanium with a mirror-polished finish. For guys who split time between work and play on their phone, Split View lets you run two apps side-by-side for the first time on iPhone, so you can watch game highlights while texting the group chat without switching screens.

Under the hood, it’s running the new A20 Pro chip with a custom vapor chamber for serious thermal management, plus a dual-battery setup that gets you up to 44 hours of video playback using just the outer display, or 24 hours with both displays running. Camera-wise, you’re getting a 48MP Fusion Main camera with zero shutter lag and an integrated 2x Telephoto, plus new tricks like Smart Take, which uses on-device AI to snap the photo automatically when everyone’s actually posing.

While I don’t know that there’s a huge market for folding phones, especially at this price point, Apple really seems to have nailed it on all fronts based on the videos we’ve seen (photos don’t do it justice, see it in action here), and it should be interesting to see how people take to it.

iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max: The Most Advanced Camera Apple Has Ever Built

If a folding phone feels like too much of a leap, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are where most guys will actually land, and Apple didn’t phone it in here either. The headline feature is variable aperture on the 48MP Fusion Main camera, a first for iPhone. Six laser-cut blades physically adjust the aperture to nail exposure and depth of field automatically, or you can take manual control yourself through the new Pro controls.

Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, laid out exactly what the team was chasing with this release. “With iPhone 18 Pro, we’ve made advancements to the areas our users care about most: camera, performance, battery, and intelligence. And we didn’t just make incremental improvements in these areas — we took huge leaps forward to create the best Pro iPhone we’ve ever made. iPhone 18 Pro makes it easy for anyone to capture stunning photos and videos using variable aperture, while providing more versatility for creators and more control for pros. Paired with impactful upgrades to Photographic Styles and powerful video capabilities, iPhone 18 Pro unlocks entirely new ways for users to express themselves.”

Performance gets a real bump too. The new A20 Pro chip, paired with a next-generation vapor chamber that has three times more surface area than last year’s model, delivers up to a 40% gain in sustained performance, meaning your phone won’t throttle mid-game or mid-4K-recording session. Battery life is the other big win: the Pro Max now hits up to 45 hours of video playback, which Apple calls the largest battery life jump in iPhone history.

There is also a new feature worth knowing about called Apple Reference Image, which signs sensor data at the moment of capture so you can prove a photo hasn’t been altered. It’s a smart move for anyone who shoots content for work or just wants receipts that a photo is real.

iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max come in black, silver, glacier, and a new burgundy finish. Pricing starts at $1,199 for the Pro and $1,299 for the Pro Max, with pre-orders opening September 12, and availability beginning September 18.

Apple Watch Ultra 4: Now The Most Accurate Heart Rate Tracker On Your Wrist

For the guys who take their training seriously, the new Apple Watch Ultra 4 got a legitimate hardware overhaul. Apple’s new Health Sensing System, paired with the S11 chip, now delivers what the company calls the most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable, checking your pulse every five seconds around the clock instead of periodically.

“The new Health Sensing System and S11 chip take Apple Watch Ultra 4 — our most rugged and capable Apple Watch — to the next level, delivering longer battery life, faster charging, and the most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable,” said Kaiann Drance, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Apple Watch Product Marketing. “With powerful health and fitness insights including readiness, new intelligent features, and its large, bright display, Apple Watch Ultra 4 is designed to support you wherever you go, from your workouts, to adventures, to everything you tackle in a day.”

The new readiness feature is genuinely useful if you train hard: it looks at your recent activity, sleep, and vitals and gives you a daily 0-10 score with a straightforward recommendation, whether that’s “recover,” “pace yourself,” or “go for it.” Battery life is also up significantly, with the Max Extended Workout mode now stretching to 45 hours, enough to get you through a 100-mile ultra without dying halfway through.

There is also a new Audio Intelligence suite that includes Live Rewind, which lets you rewind the last 15 seconds of a conversation if you missed something (Black Mirror much?), and faster Shazam integration right on your wrist.

Apple Watch Ultra 4 comes in natural or black titanium, starts at $799, and is available to pre-order now, with in-store availability September 18.

Apple Watch Series 12: Same Smart Upgrades, Cheaper Price Point

If the Ultra 4 is too rich for your blood (or too chunky for your wrist), the Apple Watch Series 12 gets the same Health Sensing System, S11 chip, readiness scoring, and Audio Intelligence features in Apple’s standard everyday form factor.

Drance summed up the pitch for this model too: “Apple Watch Series 12 is the most advanced health and fitness companion we’ve ever created. With our new Health Sensing System and S11 chip, Apple Watch Series 12 gives you meaningful insights, like readiness, so you can better understand how to take on your day and care for your health, plus intelligence features that make everyday life easier. And it’s all wrapped in a beautifully thin, light design you’ll love wearing all day and night.”

Battery life during outdoor workouts jumps 25%, and 15 minutes on the charger now nets you 12 additional hours of use. It’s available in 42mm and 46mm sizes, in aluminum, titanium, and a new ceramic option, starting at $399.

AirPods 5: Real Noise Cancellation In An Open-Ear Design

Rounding out the announcements, Apple introduced AirPods 5, which bring what the company is calling the industry’s best Active Noise Cancellation in an open-ear design. If you’ve avoided AirPods Pro because you don’t like the in-ear tips, this is the pair to watch.

“We’re thrilled that with AirPods 5, we’re able to bring Active Noise Cancellation — one of our most beloved features — to our most affordable AirPods,” said Dave Pakula, Apple’s vice president of Hardware Engineering. “Both AirPods 5 models deliver a world-class listening experience and enable features like Live Translation for even more people. Paired with Siri AI, AirPods are a game changer for unlocking powerful hands-free capabilities.”

The new ANC removes up to 50% more noise than AirPods 4, useful whether you’re blocking out noise a loud gym or trying to sleep on a night flight. They also pair with Siri AI for hands-free tasks, like asking Siri to pull up a text your buddy sent with a reservation confirmation buried in it. Live Translation is now available across the whole AirPods lineup too, which is great if you travel for work or just want to talk to your building’s contractor without an app open the whole time.

The Bottom Line

This is one of Apple’s most ambitious product weeks in years. The iPhone Duo is a genuine bet on foldables becoming mainstream, the 18 Pro lineup pushes the camera further than any one before it, and the Watch and AirPods updates make a real case for guys who haven’t upgraded in a cycle or two to finally pull the trigger.
