The Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Is A 637-Horsepower Track Weapon
Some cars get hyped for months before launch. This one skipped that step entirely. Mercedes-AMG just unveiled the Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung, a purist, road-legal, track-focused coupe that was already sold out before its world premiere. Only 30 of them will be made, and every single one of them was spoken for before its world premiere.
Hand-built in Affalterbach, Germany, the CLE 646 isn’t a trim package or a sticker special. It’s a ground-up reimagining of the CLE platform, stripped down, widened, and re-engineered with one mission: make it faster, sharper, and more connected to the driver than anything else wearing a three-pointed star.
Power: 637 Horsepower and Rear-Wheel Drive Only
At the center of the CLE 646 is a heavily reworked AMG M177 EVO 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine, pumping out 646 PS (or 637 hp in American terms), which is where the car gets its name. That power comes with 627 lb-ft of torque available across a wide band from 2,500-4,500 rpm, so you don’t have to chase it. A flat-plane crankshaft cuts rotating mass and sharpens throttle response, and the whole thing breathes through a bespoke exhaust system co-developed with Akrapovič, using titanium to shave weight while giving the V8 an even nastier soundtrack.
But the real news is about what’s missing: AMG pulled the Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system entirely. Power now goes exclusively to the rear wheels through an electronically controlled limited-slip differential, which means this thing is built to slide when you want it to and hook up hard when you don’t.
Straight-line numbers back it up: 0-62 mph in 3.9 seconds, 0-124 mph in 11.4 seconds, with a top speed of 193 mph.
A Suspension Setup Built With KW Automotive
Now this isn’t a car you throw an aftermarket coilover kit on and call it a day. Mercedes-AMG partnered directly with KW automotive to develop a steel sprung coilover suspension exclusive to the CLE 646, featuring four-way adjustable dampers with independent low-speed and high-speed rebound and compression settings.
As such, you can dial in exactly how the car reacts under braking, turn-in, and acceleration, and separately tune how it handles bumps and rough pavement at speed. It’s the kind of adjustability usually reserved for dedicated race cars.
Brakes Built For Racetrack Punishment
Stopping power comes from an AMG Ceramic High-Performance Composite Braking System, with 16.5 x 1.6-inch ceramic discs and six-piston fixed calipers up front, and 14.2 x 1.3-inch discs with single-piston floating calipers out back.
AMG also engineered a dedicated brake-cooling system, with large bumper intakes up front feeding air straight to the rotors so the brakes hold up through repeated hot laps. The gold-painted calipers aren’t just for looks either, they’re a signal this car means business.
Wide-Body Built Almost Entirely From Carbon Fiber
Visually, this is where the CLE 646 separates itself from anything else in the Mercedes lineup. The bodyshell was widened by 2.4 inches at both the front and rear to fit a much more aggressive stance, and the widened front fenders, front fascia, side sills, hood, roof, rear apron, diffuser, trunk lid, and manually adjustable rear wing are all carbon fiber. Even the rear windows are polycarbonate instead of glass to cut weight further.
The result of all that carbon and re-engineering? We’re talking roughly 375 pounds of weight savings compared to the donor CLE Coupe. That weight comes off a car that’s also structurally reinforced with an integrated roll bar for added rigidity, so it’s stiffer and lighter at the same time, which is exactly what you want in a track-focused build.
Rolling stock is equally serious: AMG Performance forged wheels measuring 11 x 20 inches front and 12 x 20 inches rear, wrapped in 305/30 ZR 20 front and 335/30 ZR 20 rear tires developed using technology from the Mercedes-AMG ONE hypercar. The exclusive two-tone paint, Mojave Silver Magno up front transitioning to Obsidian Black Magno from the B-pillar back, makes sure nobody mistakes this for a standard CLE.
Straight From AMG Leadership
This car wasn’t born from a typical product roadmap, it actually came from a small group of AMG engineers who wanted to build something extreme just because they could. Dr. Stefan Weckbach, Chairman of the Management Board of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, put it best:
“For me, the Mercedes‑AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung represents the very essence of AMG. This vehicle came to life because highly rational engineers dreamed of a highly irrational car. We turned that dream into reality in the form of maximum driving dynamics and an unparalleled driving experience.”
Bastian Baudy, Chief Design Officer of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, echoed that sentiment when talking about the car’s aggressive design language:
“Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung sets new benchmarks with its uncompromising presence and driving dynamics. Through the extensive use of carbon fiber, we were able to create a particularly distinctive appearance. Its bold proportions and the sheer size of the grille underscore the ambition to present a vehicle of extremes. The result is a masterpiece, full of performance and character.”
Why This One Is Different: The Mythos Series
The CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung is only the second car in Mercedes-Benz’s ultra-exclusive Mythos Series, a lineup reserved for extremely rare collector vehicles built in strictly limited numbers. The first was the Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed, a roofless, windshield-less two-seater capped at 250 units. The CLE 646 takes a different approach, staying road-legal while leaning even harder into track capability, and with just 30 units being built, it’s rarer than nearly anything else wearing an AMG badge.
Every single one is hand-built in Affalterbach off the CLE 53 platform, tying it back to AMG’s history of extreme special builds like the legendary AMG 300 CE 6.0 “The Hammer.”
If you’re the kind of guy who tracks every AMG release, this is the one to know about, even though you can’t get your hands on one, as all were spoken for before the car was revealed!
