10 Airport Tips Every Guy Needs To Know Before His Next Flight
Airports have a way of turning even the most laid-back guy into a stressed-out mess. Between long lines, cramped seats, and the constant fear of forgetting something important, air travel isn’t exactly relaxing. But it doesn’t have to be a disaster every time.
As someone who has traveled extensively for the past 15+ years, I’ve put together the airport survival guide that I wish someone had handed me years ago. Here are 10 tips to make your next trip smoother, cheaper, and a lot less stressful.
1. Bring an Empty Water Bottle (And Some Snacks)
You already know you can’t bring liquids through security, so stop buying a $3 bottle of water and tossing it before you get to the checkpoint. Bring an empty bottle instead and fill it up at a water fountain once you’re through. It’s a small move that saves you real money over time, especially if you fly often.
While you’re at it, pack some snacks too. A bag of cookies, a granola bar, or trail mix thrown in your carry-on will save you from paying $12 for a sad airport sandwich. If you have time before your flight, swing by a bakery or coffee shop on the way and grab a bagel or breakfast sandwich to go. Trust me, your stomach and your wallet will both thank you.
2. Get TSA PreCheck Or Global Entry
If you fly more than once or twice a year, signing up for one of these programs is a no-brainer. For a relatively small fee and a quick background check, you get to skip the long security lines, keep your shoes and belt on, and leave your laptop in your bag. There’s even TSA PreCheck Touchless ID lines in some airports that make it even faster to get through security.
These programs pay for themselves fast, both in time saved and in stress avoided. And both are good for 5 years, so you’ll definitely get your use out of them.
3. Arrive Earlier Than You Think You Need To
Nobody wants to be the guy sprinting through the terminal, dodging strollers and dragging a rolling suitcase behind him like it’s the opening scene of an action movie. Give yourself two hours for domestic flights and three for international ones. While that might seem extreme, security lines are unpredictable, and showing up early beats standing at the gate watching the door close without you.
4. Snag The Aisle Seat
Window seats look nice in theory, but the aisle is where the real winners sit. You can get up and stretch your legs whenever you want, hit the bathroom without waking up two strangers, and generally move around more freely on longer flights. Yes, you’ll get bumped by the drink cart a few times, but it’s worth it.
5. Pack Earplugs And A Sleep Mask
Earplugs (or noise-canceling headphones) are your best defense against crying babies, chatty seatmates, and blasting cabin announcements, and a sleep mask blocks out harsh cabin lights so your body actually thinks it’s bedtime. Throw them in your bag every trip. This combo has saved me on more flights than I can count.
6. Double (And Triple) Check Your Travel Documents
Passport, ID, boarding pass, any visas you might need – be sure to check them before you leave the house, and check them again before you walk into the airport. Forgetting a document can cost you your flight and a small fortune in rebooking fees. If you’re the forgetful type, keep a checklist on your phone and run through it every single trip. No exceptions.
7. Pack Light And Stick To A Carry-On
You do not need five pairs of shoes and 14 pairs of underwear for a long weekend. Most guys can fit everything they need for a week into a single carry-on if they’re honest with themselves about what they’ll actually wear. Skipping checked luggage means saved money, no waiting at baggage claim, no risk of lost bags, and a much faster exit once you land.
8. Wear Your Comfiest Sweats
Leave the jeans and button-down shirt for when you finally land. Airplane cabins are basically a temperature-control experiment gone wrong, and a good pair of sweats doubles as a built-in blanket. Comfort wins every time on travel day.
9. Talk To The Person Next To You
It’s easy to put in headphones and shut the world out for the entire flight, and sometimes that is exactly what you need. But don’t be afraid to chat up your seatmate every once in a while. You never know who you’ll end up sitting next to, and a little small talk can turn a boring flight into a genuinely good story, or even a date!
10. Download Entertainment And Bring A Portable Charger
Airplane Wi-Fi isn’t always reliable, and outlets aren’t always available. Download your shows, movies, or podcasts before you leave, and throw a portable charger in your bag so a dead phone or tablet doesn’t ruin your flight. Future you, stuck in a middle seat somewhere over the ocean, will be grateful.

A little preparation, the right seat, and snacks in your bag can turn travel day from a headache into just another part of the adventure. Safe travels. ✈️
