Spring break

Spring Break is almost here, and that means that thousands of revelers getting ready to embark on their first trip to warm weather destinations after this year’s particularly freezing winter. While Spring Break should be all about relaxing and soaking up the sun, doing a little planning ahead of time can go a long way toward creating a better vacation experience. Of course I’m talking about the packing process.

For those of you that put it off until five minutes before you need to leave for the airport, this is mostly directed toward you. Give yourself some more time. I promise, you won’t regret it when you arrive in your destination. There’s nothing worse than arriving to the beach and realizing you don’t have any of the right stuff to make the most of your vacation. If you’re wondering about the wardrobe staples you need for a successful Spring Break this year, look no further than this handy packing guide to getting away in style!

Go for Lightweight Versatility

When you’re packing, you want to maximize your opportunity to weight ratio. Thankfully, if you’re hitting the beach like most Spring Break revelers, you’re not going to need anything too heavy. If you’re planning a ski trip to make the most out of the end of the season, well, you’re on your own with that. For most guys, packing a lightweight bag for a warm weather vacation should be easy.

Bring a tank top, a couple of versatile button downs to throw over it or to wear out to dinner, and a few comfy tee shirts. As shirts are concerned, that’s really everything you need. In terms of outerwear, you definitely should bring a sweater or other light knitwear for nighttime. Chances are, you won’t need more than one, so go with a neutral grey or camel that you can wear with anything.

Go Big, Go Bright, Go Bold

One of the best things about the warm weather and the festivities of Spring Break is the opportunity to let loose a little. You can relax your style rules a little bit while you’re on vacation and still look great doing it. Our advice? Go brighter and bolder than you would normally. If you stick to the same neutral shorts all summer long, go for something more colorful. GQ recommends trying out a patterned look for something with a bit of character.

Aside from your shorts, there are other areas you can get creative that you might not have thought of before. Take your socks for instance. VK Nagrani has men’s designer socks with an edge, adding a pop of color to your look. They’re perfect for Spring Break, and actually, the rest of the year as well.

Get a Better Hat

Another area worth looking into an upgrade is your headwear. While you might enjoy your opportunity to get a tan, you should take the necessary precautions to make sure you’re doing so safely. Protecting your face from the sun doesn’t mean you need to sacrifice style though. If you’re one of the guys who is content to just wear an old baseball cap, all the power to you, but if you’re looking for something that really says you’re taking your Spring Break to the next level, go for a more interesting option.

Perhaps the most visible hat shop in America after Lids, Goorin Bros. is arguably also the best place to find a hat with more character than your faded 49ers favorite. Go for something light in both weight and color, like a straw or Panama style. Trust us, there’s a hat in there that you can pull off, you just need to build up the confidence to break it out.

Ditch Your Board Shorts Already

Lastly, if you’re going to be spending a fair amount of time in the water, you really should take the time to find a pair of swim trunks that won’t embarrass you. In all likelihood, you’re going to be wearing the same one of two swimsuits every day of your trip, so it’s worth investing in a style that is both flattering and contemporary. One of the best companies to find this mythical swimwear? Vilbrequin. The company has a range of suits that up your cool factor and keep you looking good on the beach. After all, isn’t it time you bid adieu to your old board shorts?
