Tom Brady, the seven-time Super Bowl champion who many considers the greatest football player of all time, announced today that he was retiring for good. And while he did the same thing last year, only to come out of retirement for one more season a few months later, this time it’s probably really for good.

While many thought Tom could continue playing the game even at the ripe old age of 45, his dismal performance with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this season proved that it’s time for him to hang up his cleats for good. As it is, pushing his luck and returning to the game cost him his marriage, so was it really worth it?

No, it most definitely was not.

Brady took to social media today, posting an emotional beach-side video where he said:

“Good morning, guys. I’ll get to the point right away. I’m retiring for good. I know the process was a pretty big deal last time. So, when I woke up this morning, I figured I’d just press record and let you guys know first so. I won’t be long-winded. You only get one super emotional retirement essay and I used mine up last year.

I really thank you guys so much to everyone single one of you for supporting me. My family, my friends, my teammates, my competitors… I can go on forever. There’s too many. Thank you guys for allowing me to live my absolute dream.

I wouldn’t change a thing.”

Brady, who won six Super Bowls with the New England Patriots and one with the Buccaneers, ends his career as the NFL’s leader in career passing yards (89,214) and touchdown passes (649). The three-time league MVP passed for 4,694 yards — third most in the NFL — and 25 touchdowns this past season, his third with Tampa Bay.

So what’s next for Brady? He can immediately begin working as an analyst for Fox Sports, which signed him to a 10-year, $375 million contract this past summer. And he’s got a handful of other ventures which should keep him as well, including his Brady clothing line, his TB12 Sports health and wellness brand, and his own production company.

Enjoy the next chapter of your life Tom. And all that hot young tail that will be sliding into your DMs now that you’re single. 🙂
