Everything You Need To Know About Self-Driving Cars

Published

on

They are all the rage at the moment, and it looks likely that they are going to become more and more popular in the years to come. But if you are wondering about self-driving cars – whether they really work as they are meant to, what the potential dangers are and so on – you are not alone. As it happens, there are a lot of things that you might want to know about self-driving cars, and that is what we are going to take a look at in this article right now.

Here are some of the main things you will want to know about self-driving cars, whether you are thinking about driving one or you are just curious about them and how they are likely to change the experience on the roads.

There Are Different Levels Of Automation

Something that a lot of people don’t realize is that there are actually a lot of different levels of automation that a car can have. In other words, it’s not just a case of a car being either automated or not – in fact, a car can be somewhat automated, and to many different degrees. So what are some of the different levels of automation that a car can have?

The oldest cars out there obviously have zero automation, and this is what many people are used to. Over time, however, these are going to become less and less common, which is going to be interesting. As the human drive becomes less and less in charge, it is certainly going to affect the experience on the roads considerably.

Beyond that, you also have vehicles which have a low level of automation. Generally, this means that the driving experience is being aided by one or two small kinds of assistance. That could include help with the steering or with the parking, for instance, which is now very common in modern cars – and again something you might be used to.

Further to that, you have something you might call partial automation. This is now the most common automation level in new vehicles, and there are many qualities to this that a lot of drivers really enjoy. For instance, these cars generally have onboard computers which control a lot of different features and functions at once. That could include steering and acceleration, and even lane control and so on. You might again be used to this if you have a modern car.

There is a fine line between that and the highest level of automation, but it is this latter mode which people are generally referring to when they talk about self-driving cars. At this level, there is full autonation of the driving process, where everything is controlled by the computer. There is always the option for the human driver to intervene – and sometimes they may still have to – but in general, the car very much drives itself. This is what is going to become more and more common in the near future, so look out for them.

They Have Safety Implications On The Road

There is no doubt that the issue of safety is the most important when it comes to driving, and this is something that is going to become more and more of a thorny concern in the near future as self-driving cars become more the norm. There are lots of safety implications in place which we are all going to have to become aware of, and which are going to affect the driving experience considerably. So what kinds of implications might these be?

One of the most important of these is surely the question of who is to blame when there is an accident on the roads. Even with all cars on the road being the best and latest self-driving vehicles, there would still be the occasional crash or other incident, and when that happens it will be important to try and work out who is responsible. That might become an issue as we move onwards, and it’s something that will come with more and more of a self-driving car being on the road.

There is also the issue of overriding. From time to time, it might be that this doesn’t work, or not as well as it should, and when that happens it might lead to some very dangerous incidents indeed. This is something that again is going to have to be ironed out over time, and hopefully that will happen sooner rather than later.

Finally, there is a possibility for self-driving cars to be hacked into externally, leading to the potential for accidents to be caused on purpose. This is something you will see more and more of in the news in the near future, so it’s absolutely worth being aware of, as it could start to soon affect us all.

There Are Definite Benefits

All that being said, there are certainly benefits to self-driving cars, and it is definitely going to be a type of vehicle that we all enjoy at some point or another. This kind of vehicle is certainly going to be useful in a lot of ways, including when you might not be able to drive a car fully yourself. It is going to prove very useful for those with physical disabilities, for instance, and in that sense there might be a lot of social good out of these vehicles.

At the same time, self-driving means that fuel efficiency will likely increase significantly, so that is something to look forward to as well. It should mean that we generally spend less money to get around, which will probably be very welcome for a lot of people. So as you can see, there are some significant benefits to these kinds of cars that we should be aware of.

Those are the main things that you will want to know about self-driving cars, whether or not you are thinking about buying one yourself. The more you know about these vehicles, the better the experience of them being on the roads will be for us all.
