Back in March during the height of the pandemic, guitar maker Fender offered up a free three-month subscription to Fender Play, their online learning app for guitar, bass and ukulele. At the time, people stuck at home had been taking up all kinds of new skills, whether it be baking sourdough bread, remodeling their home, or learning to play a musical instrument.
Fender wanted to help with that last part, so they gave 3 months of free online guitar lessons through their Fender Play app to aspiring musicians, and it was a massive success, with their user base growing from 150,000 to 930,000 subscribers. I planned on taking advantage of this deal myself, as I hadn’t played the guitar since grade school and wanted to get back into it.
So why exactly were they doing this? It’s really quite simple:
“With this new, current reality, it’s clear we need music now more than ever,” said Fender CEO Andy Mooney. “Music has the power to connect us, create a sense of community, and most importantly, lift our spirits. We hope offering Fender Play to even more aspiring players allows them to explore their creativity and make some noise while we’re spending more time inside.”
The only problem? I didn’t own a guitar, and all of the music stores near me were closed at the time. And with that, my dreams of learning that bitchin’ guitar solo in Steely Dan’s Peg were dashed. Or so I thought. But as luck would have it, Fender is giving us an encore, offering the same deal again, from now through the end of 2020.
According to Fender, this free subscription to their app includes:
- Bite-sized lessons
- Professional-quality video
- Ways to track your progress
- Learning how to play songs you love
- The ability to practice anywhere, any time, on any device
Clearly, giving away free guitar lessons paid off big time for Fender, as they sold more guitars this year than any other year in the company’s history, while growing their Fender Play user base by 500%! I may have missed out on this deal last time, but this time I’m getting a guitar ASAP so that I can jam out in my living room. (Sorry in advance to my roommate)
