If you’ve ever wished your BMW M2 could handle a snowy morning commute with the same brutality it delivers on a summer track day, BMW just heard you. The 2027 BMW M2 with M xDrive is officially here, and it marks the first time in the M2’s history that an all-wheel-drive system has been offered on this legendary compact sports car. The market launch kicks off in late summer 2026, with production beginning in August.

AWD Meets M DNA: What M xDrive Actually Does

Don’t let the four driven wheels fool you, as BMW hasn’t turned the M2 into a grocery-getter. The M xDrive system uses an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the transfer case to split power between the front and rear axles only when needed. In normal driving, power goes exclusively to the rear wheels, keeping that classic M2 rear-drive feel intact. The front wheels only get called into action when the rears are overwhelmed. That’s the M blueprint, and BMW isn’t messing with it.

Working alongside M xDrive is the Active M Differential, which distributes power fully variably between the rear wheels. The result is maximum traction without sacrificing the sharp, playful character that makes the M2 one of the most beloved driver’s cars on the planet.

473 Horsepower, All-Weather Capable

Under the hood, you’re still looking at the same fire-breathing 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder with BMW M TwinPower Turbo technology, pumping out 473 hp at 6,250 rpm and 443 lb-ft of torque. That’s paired with an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic – no manual option on this AWD variant, but the automatic has been plenty satisfying in the standard M2.

What M xDrive adds is year-round usability. Whether you’re dealing with ice, snow, or a rain-soaked track day, the M2 with M xDrive is engineered to keep you planted and in control. BMW is calling it “M feeling without any trade-off in performance – through every season and in almost any road conditions,” and given the specs, that’s not just marketing talk.

0–60 in 3.6 Seconds: Faster Than The RWD Model

Here’s where the numbers get serious. The M2 with M xDrive rockets from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds, a full 0.3 seconds quicker than the rear-wheel-drive version. Use the one-foot rollout method and that drops to a jaw-dropping 3.3 seconds. The sprint to 124 mph comes in at 12.8 seconds (12.5 with rollout), and the 50–75 mph passing punch takes just 3.7 seconds. Top speed is limited to 155 mph, but spec the optional M Driver’s Package and BMW will unlock it to 177 mph.

That’s supercar-adjacent territory in a compact sports car that you can actually drive to work in February.

Driver Control: You Can Still Go Full Rear-Wheel Drive

For purists worried about losing the M2’s raw, tail-happy character, BMW has you covered. The M xDrive system is fully configurable via the M Setup menu, allowing you to tailor how the AWD system behaves to match your mood or the conditions. The most exciting option? A 2WD mode with DSC deactivated, sending power to the rear wheels only, unlocking as BMW puts it, “a driving experience of remarkable purity.”

It’s the best of both worlds: AWD grip when you need it, RWD theater when you want it.

A New Color Worth Talking About: Borusan Turkish Blue

The 2027 M2 with M xDrive also introduces a new paint option that’s never been available on an M2 before. BMW Individual Borusan Turkish Blue joins the lineup as a special finish exclusive to this model, alongside a total palette of five metallic colors, three solid options, and six BMW Individual choices. If you’re the type who wants your sports car to stand out in a parking lot full of black and gray, this one’s worth a look.

What The Engineers Are Saying

Alexander Karajlovic, Vice President for Development at BMW M GmbH, summed up the significance of this launch:

“The new BMW M2 with M xDrive opens the next chapter in the story of an icon. It breaks new ground in blending the strong, uncompromising character of the BMW M2 compact high-performance sports car with the superior traction and precision of M xDrive for the first time. This fundamentally upgraded car lays down the performance generated by its straight-six engine with even greater poise and assurance, and adds maximum control, stability and acceleration in any conditions to its dynamic repertoire. Like its stablemates, the BMW M2 with M xDrive is therefore very much a driver’s car, but it also elevates its high-performance abilities to a new level and redefines sporting prowess in the compact M segment.”

Hard to argue with that.

Price and Availability

The 2027 BMW M2 with M xDrive will carry a base MSRP of $73,600 (plus $1,350 destination and handling), with the car launching in late summer 2026. For context, the M2 was BMW M GmbH’s best-selling high-performance model in 2025, so we expect demand to be strong for this AWD variant from day one.

If you’ve been on the fence about the M2 because winters in your part of the country make a pure RWD sports car impractical, BMW just removed your last excuse.
