Early Tuesday morning, Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Henry Ruggs III was involved in a fatal car accident that resulted in the death of a 23-year old woman and her dog.

According to reports, Ruggs III was driving his army green Chevrolet Corvette C8 at a speed of 156 mph with a blood alcohol level of .161 (twice the Nevada legal limit) before slamming into the rear of a Toyota RAV4 in an intersection, causing the Toyota to burst into flames. Police also found a loaded gun on the floor of Ruggs’ car.

The Las Vegas Metro PD released the following statement:

On Nov. 2, at approximately 3:39 am, the LVMPD responded to a traffic collision near the intersection of South Rainbow Boulevard and South Spring Valley Parkway, involving a Chevrolet Corvette and a Toyota Rav4. Responding officers located the Toyota on fire. Fire department personnel responded and located a deceased victim inside the Toyota. The preliminary investigation indicates the front of the Chevrolet collided with the rear of the Toyota. The driver of the Chevrolet, identified as 22-year-old Henry Rugs III, remained on scene and showed signs of impairment. He was transported to UMC hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Ruggs will be charged with DUI resulting in death.

Ruggs and his girlfriend, Kiara Washington, 22, were hospitalized with non-life threatening but serious injuries. Ruggs made his first appearance in court on Wednesday morning, where he remained seated in a wheelchair with a foam brace on his neck and jail guards at his sides.

As you can imagine, Henry Ruggs III faces a slew of charges, including two felony charges of DUI and reckless driving. The DUI resulting in death charge carries a sentence of 2-20 years, while the reckless driving charge is 1-6 years. In addition, Clark County prosecutors intend to charge Ruggs with additional counts of DUI and reckless driving, both resulting in substantial bodily harm, as well as possession of a firearm while under the influence, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. With these new charges, Ruggs could faces up to 40 years in prison.

The Las Vegas Raiders dropped Ruggs from the team late Tuesday night, just hours after the crash and shortly after he was released from a hospital and booked into a Las Vegas jail.

Needless to say, Henry Ruggs III’s promising young football career is all but done at this point, and he’ll be facing some serious prison time as well. A young woman dead, and a situation that could have been avoid had he just called an Uber instead of drinking and driving. 🙁
