The BMW Concept Speedtop Is A Bold New Take On The Touring
BMW turned heads at this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on the shores of Lake Como with the debut of a bold new concept car: the BMW Concept Speedtop. It’s a slick, three-door shooting brake that blends sporty Touring DNA with design language that pushes well beyond the usual. The kicker? It’s going into limited production, with just 70 units available globally.
Shooting Brake That Stands Still Yet Looks Like It’s Moving
The Concept Speedtop plays with proportions in a way that feels like a throwback and a step into the future all at once. BMW Design Chief Adrian van Hooydonk summed it up perfectly:
“A true BMW exudes dynamism and elegance even when it’s standing still. And that’s also the case with our new concept car. The BMW Concept Speedtop is characterised first of all by its profile. It is very unique in the automotive industry. In this way, we have created an exclamation mark for our entire lineup of vehicles, especially for the Touring models.”
Visually, the car leans heavily into its heritage cues while executing them with unmistakable modernity. There’s a dramatic V-shaped front end with a sharp shark-nose, slim front lights, and an illuminated kidney grille that makes the car pop even when parked. A central spine runs seamlessly from the hood across the roof to the rear spoiler, emphasizing its athletic, tapered shape.
BMW went with a two-tone color gradient on the roof, transitioning from “Floating Sunstone Maroon” to “Floating Sundown Silver”—a detail that isn’t just eye-catching but reinforces the car’s elongated touring profile. Add in bespoke 14-spoke two-tone wheels, and you’ve got a ride that looks handcrafted for scenic highway escapes.
Luxurious Craftsmanship In Every Detail
Inside, the Concept Speedtop is a masterclass in artisanal detail and high-end materials. BMW pulled cues from traditional brogue styling to add depth to the leatherwork, giving it a sense of authenticity and craftsmanship. The interior color palette echoes the exterior, with rich Sundown Maroon tones blending into Moonstone White seating.
Lighting gets special treatment too. That same central spine on the roof shows up inside as a light beam in the leather headliner—adding ambient glow that feels more boutique hotel than automobile.
Storage is clever and considered. The leather-trimmed trunk is split into two compartments and has enough room for gear needed on longer road trips. Behind the seats, two leather-strapped compartments hold custom Schedoni bags—designed to match the car’s material scheme. Known for their handcrafted luxury goods, Schedoni’s partnership brings an added level of exclusivity. A third, matching weekender bag can be tucked into the trunk for longer escapes.
Built for Weekend Getaways, And Built to Move
While the car is clearly made for the design-conscious driver, it isn’t just a pretty face. Under the hood, the BMW Concept Speedtop is packing BMW’s most powerful V8 engine currently in the portfolio. That’s right, this thing isn’t just about looking fast. It is fast.
BMW’s Bernd Körber, Senior VP of Brand and Product Management, explained the concept’s path from Villa d’Este debut to driveway reality:
“Last year, the presentation of the BMW Concept Skytop at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on Lake Como generated great enthusiasm among connoisseurs and automotive enthusiasts. This led to a strictly limited production run of 50 units. Thanks to this positive response, this year we have decided to also offer the BMW Concept Speedtop in a limited production series of 70 units. This extraordinary vehicle is now available for order. We are pleased to be able to offer collectors and enthusiasts another exclusive model.”
Limited Production, Maximum Cool Factor
BMW isn’t just teasing enthusiasts with this one – it’s actually building it! But like the Skytop before it, the Concept Speedtop will be produced in ultra-limited numbers, making it more of a collector’s trophy than a showroom mainstay. Only 70 units will roll off the line.
If you’re into rare performance cars, love craftsmanship, or just want to own something no one else on your block will have, this might be worth trying to lock down.
