2015 Mustang - Empire State Building

As the world honors 50 years of the Ford Mustang, what better way to celebrate one of the most iconic car brands than putting one back on top of one of the most iconic buildings like it did back in 1965, when Ford parked a Mustang convertible on the top of the Empire State Building.

That’s right, Ford decided to display a new 2015 Mustang convertible on the 86th floor observation deck of the Empire State Building. I figured Ford would simply helicopter the Mustang into place, but it turns out that you can’t do that because of the ESB’s spire on top. So how do they get it up there? Piece by piece!

Ford started with a Triple Yellow 2015 Mustang GT convertible, which they sent to Michigan’s DST Industries to chop up into six major slices and many, many more little components. Why? The elevator that’s taking the car to the 86th floor of what once was the world’s tallest building has an entrance only 36 inches wide!

The car comes back together on a custom frame that all the pieces get bolted onto. The challenge is that the crew only has a six-hour window to get the car out onto the deck and assembled, because the observation deck is open to the public from 8am-2am.

Watch how Ford prepped this Mustang for the ride of its life:

The 2015 Mustang Convertible will be on display for visitors to the Empire State Building observation deck April 16-17. When the deck closes to the public at 2am on April 18th, the crew will descend on the display car to reverse the entire process and remove it before visitors return at 8am.
