Coming off of a fairly successful debut of the first trailer for Ant Man, Marvel has decided to take a victory lap and give us yet another look at what is pretty much sure to be their biggest movie to date. Needless to say, this new Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer is absolutely amazing, and it continues to establish that this is going to be by far the darkest journey these characters have been on so far.
Ultron, a malevolent robot created by Tony Stark and Bruce Banner as the ultimate peacekeeping force, plans to “tear the team apart from the inside” and we’re already seeing those fragments being made as Thor lectures Tony about dabbling in what he does not know, and of course, Stark and Banner battling it out in the middle of the street as Tony uses his Hulkbuster armor to suppress the beast.. Also interesting is a small peak into Black Widow’s backstory, where it seems as though she was tortured by her former employers in Russia.
The visuals here are stunning. Now that Joss Whedon is comfortable directing a big movie like this, it’s clear that he’s really having some fun with it now, with moments that feel ripped straight out of the comic books. Beyond that, the actors seem to be adding a great deal of gravitas to these roles, relishing in the darker material for some genuine emotional impact. If the first Avengers movie was a glorious rock concert, this is the Avengers movie where the band starts to fracture, and I for one, can’t wait to see it all come together.
Avengers: Age of Ultron opens on May 1st.
