Eagles QB Jalen Hurts Done For The Season With Blood Clots In Both Lungs

The Eagles are without their franchise quarterback for the rest of the season, and the reason is far more serious than a typical injury. Quarterback Jalen Hurts has been diagnosed with blood clots in both of his lungs, and he will not take another snap this season.

The news came out today in a statement released by the team and Hurts’ agent, Nicole Lynn. A league source who spoke on condition of anonymity, because of how sensitive the situation is, confirmed that Hurts is out for the rest of the year.

What the Diagnosis Actually Is

The statement lays out two conditions: deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli. In plain English, that means clots in the deep veins plus clots that have traveled into the lungs, and in Hurts’ case, both lungs. “Bilateral” is the word that tells you it is not limited to one side.

Here is the silver lining. Hurts, 28, is clinically stable, and his treatment “should only involve” blood thinners, per the statement. For a diagnosis this serious, that is about as reassuring as it gets.

The catch is that he cannot play football while on blood thinners. Contact sports and blood thinners do not mix, which is exactly why the season is over for him. The expectation is that he can return once his treatment wraps up.

How We Got Here

Now this did not come out of nowhere, and the timeline is worth walking through.

On October 10, in London ahead of the Eagles’ game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Hurts was diagnosed with a superficial vein thrombosis in his left calf. He played in that game. It was a smaller, less alarming diagnosis at the time, and it did not keep him off the field overseas.

Then came the follow-up. Hurts had an ultrasound on the Wednesday before the Carolina game, and doctors found movement in the clot. That changed everything. He sat out Sunday’s matchup with the Panthers, a 25-14 Eagles loss, and stayed under evaluation over the next several days. By Monday morning, the more serious diagnosis was official.

That sequence is the part that should grab your attention. A calf issue that looked manageable turned into something far more serious in the span of about a week. It is a reminder that your body does not always send a loud warning before a quiet problem becomes a big one.

Hurts Stays Close To The Team

Even though he is done playing for the year, Hurts is not disappearing. The statement says he will remain around the team and keep working on his conditioning while he goes through treatment. For a quarterback who built his reputation on preparation and physical conditioning, staying in the building and staying in shape makes sense. When the doctors clear him, he wants to be ready.

Tanner McKee Takes The Wheel

With Hurts sidelined, Tanner McKee, the backup, will step in as the starter. Cole Payton and Joe Milton are the other quarterbacks on the roster, so Philadelphia has bodies at the position, but the pressure lands squarely on McKee.

His first real test did not go smoothly. McKee and the offense struggled for much of the afternoon against Carolina, and the Panthers walked out with the win. One bad game does not define a player, but the margin for error just got a lot thinner.

The Eagles Are Already In A Hole

Here’s what makes this even rougher. The Eagles have lost four straight and sit at 2-4. That is not where a team with legitimate championship hopes wants to be in late October, and now they have to try to climb out of it without their franchise quarterback.

Next up is a Monday game against the Dallas Cowboys. A rivalry game is a tough place to try to stop the bleeding, and it will tell us a lot about whether McKee and this offense can settle in or whether the slide keeps going.

What This Means Going Forward

Football fans tend to zoom in on the standings and the depth chart, and that is fair. A season that started with big expectations is now in serious danger. But the bigger story is Hurts’ health. Blood clots in the lungs are a serious medical issue, and the fact that he is stable and expected to recover with blood thinners is the headline that matters most.

For Eagles fans, the next few weeks are about two things. First, rooting for McKee to find a rhythm and keep the season from completely unraveling. Second, hoping Hurts gets through his treatment cleanly and comes back healthy.

The season will keep moving, and so will Philly. But for now, the quarterback who has been the face of this team is on the sideline, doing the work to get back to full strength.

Trent Carter is looking to keep the tradition of T&A alive and well in today's politically correct world with his popular Thong Battle features, among other things. He also covers even racier topics on our sister site, which is definitely not safe for work!
