There’s no doubt about it, the 2018 Ford Mustang GT will be a force to be reckoned with, with 460HP on tap and a 0-60 time of less than 4 seconds. But even that was not enough for the passionate Mustang team, who worked tirelessly off-the-clock to create a special package that takes things up a notch or two.
The new Performance Package Level 2 bridges the gap between the Mustang GT Performance Pack and the hardcore Shelby GT350 / GT350R, which is a ton of fun for sure, but it’s also really expensive.. and it’s not really very practical as a daily driver.
While the Performance Pack Level 1 is impressive in it’s own right (featuring unique chassis and ABS tuning, unique stability control and electric power-assisted steering, Brembo six-piston front brake calipers with larger rotors, a k-brace, larger radiator, strut tower brace and a TORSEN rear differential with 3.73 axle ratio), the Level 2 package dials it up a notch, preparing it for battle with the Camaro SS 1LE.
The plethora of performance upgrades for the Performance Pack Level 2 make the Mustang GT more track-focused. The Mustang’s ride height has been lowered thanks to updated MagneRide suspension, giving it a more aggressive stance. The car has also been fitted with a redesigned front splitter and rear spoiler that deliver more downforce and gives the car more grip in the corners.
A set of 305/30R19 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 summer performance tires (1.5 inches wider than the wheels on Performance Pack Level 1) wrapped around 19×10.5-inch front and 19×11-inch rear wheels provide a firmer grip and work with the retuned chassis to put the car more than a half-inch closer to the ground. In addition, everything (stabilizer bars, springs, etc) are stiffened up across the board.
Even without any weight reduction or added power, the changes are immediately noticeable, with Road and Track reportedly shaving 3.5 seconds off the lap time of a car with the Level 1 package at Grattan Raceway in Michigan. Now that’s impressive!
The Performance Pack Level 2 will set you back an additional $6500 over the cost of a standard Mustang GT (and $1500 more than the Level 1 package), which seems like an absolute bargain to me.
