7 Things That Can Destroy Your Tires

It’s natural for the tread on your tires to become worn over time as a result of regular driving. However, there are some bad driving habits and mechanical problems that can accelerate this process. Below are just some of the things that could be destroying your tires.

Driving on underinflated tires

Driving on underinflated tires is one of the most common causes of tire wear. The tread will usually be visibly worn around the sides of the tires. If the pressure is too low, you could even experience a blowout. Make sure to regularly check your tire pressure to make sure that your tires are adequately pumped up.

Racing starts at headlights

If your tires are particularly worn around the center, it could be the result of using too much gas when setting off. This can create wheel spin, which can wear the tire away. Providing that you’re not taking part in a drag race, consider easing up on the acceleration as you drive off from a stationary position. High performance car owners are more likely to experience this wear.

Aggressive curb mounting

When mounting a curb to park, it’s important to not hit the curb too quickly. This is a major cause of tire damage, potentially causing a bulge. On top of damage to your tires, it could also cause damage to the wheel itself and suspension. Don’t be an aggressive curb mounter – always approach a curb slowly to minimize any damage.

Hurtling over potholes

Not swerving around potholes could also be putting your tires at risk. Deep potholes are a common cause of blowouts, so should be avoided where possible. Of course, roads shouldn’t have pot holes – if you do damage your tires on a pothole, you may find that you’re able to make a successful insurance or a legal claim to help seek compensation for the damage.

Speeding over speed bumps

Do you have a tendency to drive too fast over speed bumps? Hitting a speed bump hard could also put your tires at risk of damage. It’s best to always slow down to a crawl when going over speed bumps that you may not be familiar with – some speed bumps can be deceivingly vicious and could cause a blowout if you go over them too quickly.

Ignoring damaged suspension/rims

Damage to various other parts of your car could in turn lead to tire damage. Damaged rims on a 4×4 could cause your tire to make uneven contact with the road – new 4X4 rims could be essential. Damaged suspension could meanwhile cause wheels to become misaligned or could cause wheel to jump slightly, also leading to tire damage.

Ignoring objects stuck in tires

It’s a good habit to regularly check your tires, not just to ensure that they are well inflated and unworn, but to also make sure that there are no objects protruding out of them. Shards of glass, pieces of metal and screws can all get stuck in tires and cause air to escape. If you notice anything major stuck in your tires, you should head to a repair center as soon as possible to fix it.
