Moving out after college and creating a dream bachelor pad is a choice many men make. Roughly 15 million men in the United States are bachelors, reports George Mason University. While the transition from a student living in a parent’s house to a bachelor living alone is an exciting period in life, it is also a time to learn the basics about managing cleaning, decorating and food storage that were previously handled by a parent.

Decorate a Home Tastefully

It is time to give up the decorations of childhood and create a bachelor pad that is mature and appropriate for a personal budget. Decorating a home tastefully does not necessarily mean spending a small fortune. Furniture and wall décor that reflects a personal passion are appropriate ways to make a home look comfortable and stylish. Missionary furniture is usually made with oak wood and has a simple and rugged look with straight lines, such as a simple coffee table or a solid oak dining table.

Although a starting salary at any job is usually low and limits the furniture possibilities, a few quality pieces are always better than an apartment filled with old, worn-out and college-dorm worthy rubbish. Find a few rugged pieces of furniture that will provide comfort without draining a savings account.

Use Bay Leaves to Keep Roaches Away

Bay leaves, a spice used in food, also doubles as a natural deterrent for certain insects, including roaches. Place bay leaves in nooks and crannies around the entire home to keep roaches out.

Put Money Into Security

Living alone as a bachelor does not necessarily mean feeling safe. Peace of mind is as important as any other life skill, particularly when it pertains to feeling safe at home. A home security system often starts at a reasonable price, and putting in a basic system will reduce the number of headaches that occur in the future.

Clean It Up

A bachelor pad is never cool or interesting if it is filled with clutter, garbage or other items. A cluttered and dirty space will make it hard to invite guests and can lead to accidents due to tripping over items that are left on the floor. Set aside certain times to clean up and organize the space to make it easier to avoid a situation where the messes get out of control.

Make Pancake Batter and Store It

For easy breakfasts that take only a few minutes, make a large batch of pancake batter every few days. Use an old ketchup bottle to store the extra batter. It will stay fresh for a few days and makes the early morning a little easier to bear. Remember, breakfast is the most important meal.

Make it Comfortable

A personal bachelor pad is a space to retreat from the rest of the world and relax after a long day at work. Making the space comfortable on a personal level is the purpose of the home. Create the perfect entertainment center, set it up to enjoy personal hobbies or make it a place to simply relax and read a book.

A comfortable retreat will make a bachelor pad welcoming and encourages guests and friends with similar hobbies and interests to visit.

Moving out of a parent’s home and living solo is a transitional part of life, but that does not mean everything must be hard. By taking time to create a comfortable space and keeping it clean, it is possible to enjoy a happy and healthy solo lifestyle.
